Type: Christian, Traditional Workbooks

Grades Covered: Preschool through High School

Abeka's educational approach is spiral in nature which means that the Abeka homeschool curriculum material is introduced and then continuously reviewed. This format allows for greater retention of skills and subsequent mastery for your child, even in the high school grades.

Some of the Pros

  • Strong focus on academics using a spiral teaching method
  • Substantial number of practice pages
  • Visually appealing for preschool learners and older grades
  • Detailed teaching guidelines if needed
  • Drills, reviews, and tests are woven into program

Some of the Cons

  • Bulky and expensive teacher's editions which may be unnecessary for some
  • No manipulatives included with program although some optional visuals and flashcards are available
  • Extremely fast-paced and challenging curriculum for some
  • Too repetitive for advanced learners who may not require so much drill

If you are looking for a Christian home school curriculum the Abeka homeschool program may have just what you want in a traditional, conservative program that will instruct your children using God-honoring resources.

My Experience with Abeka Math Series

I used their books initially when we started homeschooling. I really felt I needed the structure of their program.

However, it quickly became obvious that their resources were geared more for a large school classroom, rather than a homeschool family.

Although I loved the repetition and the speed drills, I opted for a more hands-on, manipulative style of teaching arithmetic in our homeschool. If interested in using their arithmetic program, consider adding helpful manipulatives to help your child understand the concepts.
